Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee here at Raj Bhawan amidst widespread protests across the city over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Mamata Banerjee informed the Prime Minister that the people of West Bengal are against the NPR (National Population Register), NRC (National Register of Citizens) and CAA, according to media reports.

She asked the PM that the Centre should rethink on the issues and withdraw CAA.

The Chief Minister said PM Modi requested her to come for a meeting in Delhi on the issues since he had come to Bengal for other programmes, media reports added.

Amidst the protests over the CAA, Modi arrived in the city on a two day-visit to attend the function marking the 150th anniversary of Kolkata Port Trust on January 12 and other programmes.
